This is an extract from the diary of Augustus Bostock from 1854 - 1920 when
he died...at Warrnambool. He was the son of Robert & Rachael Bostock of
'Vaucluse', Cleveland, Tasmania. JAMES & HARRY from last months diary now
have a name. JAMES McCULLY being one at least.
Dear Friends, This will be the last for about a month,(100) so I will put
them on C.D. for myself, for safe keeping. If anyone would like any back
copies you can go to the Archives of The AUS-VIC-WEST Mail List. Any

SEPTEMBER 1864
Thu 1 - Stayed in Hamilton to see the Steeple Chase. Went out with HOUNDS in
afternoon. Weather fine.
Fri 2 - Came down as far as "Lawrenny" with MacArthur and stayed there all
night. Weather fine.
Sat 3 - Returned home. Went to see how they were getting on with the dam.
Got the MIDDLE CLOSED UP. STEVENS (Ernest) went down to Warrnambool. Weather
fine.
Sun 4 - Went down to KILMOREY and from there to Warrnambool. Weather fine.
Mon 5 - Stayed in Warrnambool all day. Weather fine.
Tue 6 - Attended COURT. Went to MR.RUTLEDGE'S (William) with TOM & ERNEST
(Bostock) to see about half bred rams, but MR.RUTLEDGE was not at home. SALE
OF LAND on TOM'S RUN (Bostock). Weather fine.
Wed 7 - Order timber at MARTINS (? Mr.) to come first opporuntity - some
things from store for COOMETE and KILMOREY. Weather fine.
Thu 8 - Went to KILMOREY, along BRUSH FENCE put up by FOX & Co., Run lower
line of run we got from PHILLIPS(Henry). Agreed with two men to run one mile
at £17 per mile. Went along WALL'S FENCE. He was not there. I stayed at
KILMOREY all night. Weather very fine.
Fri 9 - Wrote to McRAE (Duncan) for license for 1,000 sheep. Settled with
FOX & Co., for BRUSH FENCE at £7 ? per mile. Went with BRENNAN (Mr.) to see
line next to COMMON. Could not agree with him to go and do any of it.
Returned home. JIMMY (Bostock) ran sheep across the creek through ARSENIC.
Weather very fine.
Sat 10 - Hung gate on the stable. Ran the wethers and weaners through
ARSENIC. JAMES (McCully) and HARRY commenced morticing the posts for sheep
pens at the shed. Brought in some firewood. Weather - hot winds with
thunder storms in the afternoon.
Sun 11 - Went to BOORTKOI (Hexham) and stayed all night. Weather fair.
Mon 12 - Stayed at BOORTKOI. Drew our ewes and Kilmorey rams from TOM'S
(Bostock). Weather very stormy.
Tue 13 - Returned home. GILCHRIST (Mr.) brought down the rams. HARRY & JAMES
(McCully) morticing post for the yards at the shed. MacGREGOR (Samuel),
PATERSON (Robert Brand), AITKIN (James William Manifold), and BATEMAN
(James) called. Weather fine.
Wed 14 - James BATEMAN left. JIMMY (Bostock) returned from Boortkoi. HARRY &
JAMES commenced digging grass plot in front. MARGETTS (Edward) stayed all
night on his way to bring BATEMAN'S sheep. Weather very stormy.
Thu 15 - MARGETTS (Edward) left. All hands working in the garden. ERNEST
STEVENS came up after his two horses which got away from KILMOREY. Weather
very stormy.
Fri 16 - All hands working in the garden. ERNEST STEVENS left for KILMOREY.
Weather fine but dull.
Sat 17 - Finished digging grass plot in front and sowed grass seed. DREW (T)
went to Boortkoi for SUGAR. TOM (Bostock) had not returned from SKIPTON.
Carted stone out of paddock ready for planting potatoes. JAMES McCULLY
finished work. Weather fine and dull.
Sun 18 - MacGREGOR (Samuel), PATERSON (Robert Brand) and Jane (Catherine
Jane 'Mackersey' Bostock, wife of Thomas Edward Bostock 1), called on way to
Warrnambool on their way home from SKIPTON. Went to Warrnambool. Weather
fine.
Mon 19 - Stayed in Warrnambool to attend the REVISION COURT but it was put
off. Weather fine.
Tue 20 - Attended the REVISION COURT. Stayed in tgown all night. Weather
fine.
Wed 21 - Stayed in town to meet BAYLES (William of Melbourne - owner of
Coomete, leased by Augustus.) who was coming down by STEAMER. Fine.
Thu 22 - Returned home. Went up to BOORTKOI to go up and see show of sheep
between TOM (Bostock) and MILLIAR ( Mr.) but it did not come off. Finished
planting potatoes. Weather fine.
Fri 23 - Stayed at Boortkoi. Went down to HEXHAM to canvas ELECTORS for
BAYLES (William). Weather very stormy
Sat 24 - TOM, JIMMY (Bostock) and myself went down to Warrnambool. I called
at KILMOREY on the way down. Weather stormy.
Sun 25 - Stayed at Warrnambool all day. Weather dull.
Mon 26 - Stayed in town all day. TOM & JANE (Bostock) did not leave for home
as intended. The weather was so wet.
Tue 27 - Stayed in Warrnambool and saw about sending timber etc., to Coomete
and about things for Kilmorey. Weather very stormy.
Wed 28 - Attended COURT on case of DOGS KILLING SHEEP. TOM & JIMMY (Bostock)
left for home (? Boortkoi at Hexham). Weather fine.
Thu 29 - Went with MR.MOFFATT (John) to his meeting of Electors at
ALLENSFORD. Weather fine, excepting light showers.
Fri 30 - ATTENDED the COURT to finish the DOG CASE..... (Dogs killing his
sheep.???) Went up to Kil;morey. Weather fine...
