Hello Jon,
Well, I have just a few days ago, returned from Warrnambool and Port Fairy
regions, as my ancestors were amongst the early settlers... We had a
wonderful time visiting the special places and properties where Augustus
Bostock wrote diaries, George, James and Ernest lived and worked, and
meeting some very special local historians.
After about 18 years of research, I sat with about four ladies, one of whom
said she had to go home, as she had the original Will of my ancestor George
BOSTOCK. That was quite amazing, as you would know.
Back to your statement about the story of the Port. As George Bostock and
Thomas Manifold were partners in the first bond store on Lady Bay - 1856,
(Manifold & Bostock) I would love to get/beg/borrow a copy of the document
you speak of.
For others who don't live in the region, you may like to know that the old
Steam Packet Hotel (formerly Manifold & Bostock Bonded Stores) and whatever
else it was called at a later time, is now completely demolished.
There are a great number of modern home units on the whole region
surrounding where the Bond Store once stood. The area of the Bond Store is
fenced at the moment, but plans are for a large retail complex ??? I think.
I did speak to the man at Reception who confirmed the central site...
I am happy to share photos with anyone interested in the site. Many thanks to
all those who were so kind to us on our visit... Sincerely in Searching....
