William Hartnup BUTT - memorabilia looking for a good home
I would like to find an appropriate home for an Edwardian silver plated
presentation tea/coffee set with an inscription "Presented to Mr W H BUTT
by his friends in Dimboola and District as a token of esteem, May
2nd,1910." I stumbled across the tea service in a second-hand shop in NSW
while I was on holiday. It is in excellent condition - I have photographs
that I will send on request.
W H BUTT was William Hartnup BUTT, b 1865 in Geelong, VIC, d 1927 -
Williamstown (Melbourne), VIC,and married in 1886 in VIC to Georgina Maud
BROWNE, b 1 Feb 1864 - Hobart, TAS. They appear to have had eight children,
born variously in Collingwood (Melb) VIC, Horsham (Wimmera) VIC, and
Dimboola (Wimmera) VIC. The last of these was born in Dimboola VIC in 1907,
where BUTT was a baker and caterer. He was a sporting enthusiast who
involved himself in all the different sports available in the town and was
an active and respected member of the community. The town community held a
major gathering in the Shire Hall on the 5th of May 1910 to farewell the
family. Presentations were made to both Mr and Mrs Butt. The presentation
tea and coffee service is clearly described in a detailed newspaper report
in the local paper, the Dimboola Banner.
He left Dimboola in May 1910 and apparently took up farming in Wagga,
mainly because of the illness of his eldest son.
One of his daughters Georgina Melba BUTT b 1902 - Horsham (Wimmera), VIV d:
1979 - Wangaratta, VIC. Spouse was SUDHOLZ (Abt 1900- ?).
Due to the number of towns possibly with descendants, I have posted this
email on several likely lists.
If you are interested in acquiring this item, please contact me quickly.
The shop will hold the service until 20th November.
By the way, I have no connection with either the BUTT family or the second
hand shop. I would just like to see this item stay "in the family"!
