Subject: [AUS-VIC-WESTERN-DISTRICT] looking for Betsy Hopper nee Rogers
Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2008 07:01:33 +1000

Greetings listers,

I have Elizabeth Rebecca (Betsy) Hopper nee Rogers, married to Stephen
Hopper in Melbourne in 1859. I have lots of info on my Hopper lines, but
nothing on Betsy. She may have come to Melbourne alone looking for work
(perhaps as a domestic servant or a governess) or she may have been with her
family.

I believe this Stephen Hopper may be the one after whom Hopper's Crossing is
named; he worked there as a railway man when the line first went through the
area in the 1860s. I think the locality was originally known as Tarneit.

Betsy died in Werribee in about 1917, but I can't find her on BDM and I
can't find anything on parents or siblings.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Julie H.
