Thanks Sandra, I hope others are benefitting from all the helpful book sugestions too?
I will certainly have my work cut out for me, with all the ones I want to get now. I am happy to see I already own a couple of them.
I thought I had laid my convict gggrandfather to rest some time ago but an ancestor of his 'partener in crime' found my name on 'Claim on a Convict' and wanted to know what it would have been like for them arriving here. She, Jean, living in Wales, knew next to nothing about Oz. She has since traced the families of the two babies who were left behind in Gloucester, when their Father's burglery cost them ten years a piece.
We will meet up next month, when I go to UK and will have lunch in the same pub where our two chaps, did their drinking and planning.
I too am writing a book about it all but oh it's a big job!
Oh, and now the Head Master of the local school there, wants me to visit for a 'show and tell' time with the children. I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone, on how to make this interesting???? I have a photo of William FENNELL, my convict, thought I might take that, for starters.
I wish you well in your literary ventures too.
Regards Jan.
BTW, I have the 1881 Census CDs for U.K. and 1851 Census for Gloucester, if anyone wants a lookup.

Subject: [CONVICT] Re Books - convicts - passion
Hi Listers ... first up... I can relate to much of Micheal's work ...
although due to other reasons I am unable to commit myself to groups etc.
I administer 37 mailing lists, all bar three are surnames, primarily in the
UK. At the moment I manage two WebRings, one for Australian Family
Histories and another for the Barrett's in England. All of these stemmed
from just one person, my convict great great grandfather, John YOUARD. I
have organised for my mother to receive a Commemoration Certificate for him
at the Ceremony of Honour at the Fremantle Prison this coming Monday. I am
in the process of getting details together to publish my works surrounding
John YOUARD's life and have now seconded a cousin as my 'secretary'!!! I
hope to release the book in 2008 which is the 150 anniversary of his arrival
in Australia. As a result of 'convict John' and his colourful history, what
started out as a small project is now 115 sets of grandparents - all four of
my grandparent's lines - four books - two convicts and one criminal in
Cornwall - knights - King's wives and a mountain of paper!!! In amongst all
of this I try to maintain full time university studies and a social life!!!
Someone's signature appears with the thought that genealogy is an
addiction!!!
Now for the books - apart from the ones that Michael has mentioned Gillian
O'Mara put out a book titled 'Convict Records of Western Australia'
published by Friends of Battye Library (I don't have a date).
Charles Bateson's 'The Convict Ships 1787-1868' published by AH & AW Reed
Sydney is a good source of information. 'Dead Reckoning: how to find your
way through the Geneological Jungle of Western Australia' by Steve Howell
published by LISWA (I don't have a date) is a great resource and lists the
actual numbers of books, microforms etc. According to the introductory
letter by Brian DeGaris Chair of the Library Board and Professor of History
Murdoch Univeristy 'this is a comprehensive guide to the sources available
in Western Australia'. The convict system is discussed in plain simple
terms with no complicated academic/library jargon. Nick Vine Hall's
'Tracing Your Family History in Australia' (I think self published) (1994)
is about 3 inches thick and covers records in each state:including convicts
- from almanacs to zzzzzzzzzzz's not caught. A very simple one is The
Genealogy Centre Resource List:Austaliasia' compiled by Sue Sondalini not
forgetting 'The fate of the Artful Dodger'by Paul Buddee, which lends itself
to the Parkhurst lads and is excellent background material. Finally, 'For
the Term of His Natural Life' by Marcus Clarke and 'Unwilling Immgrants' by
Alexander Hasluck are both great for the same on each side of the mainland.
All of these books are available through the local libraries.
Well That is my little bit peoples ...
