Hello Mike

Happy To hear from you since I worked at Big Bell Gold Mine in Cue. With
fellow lister
Dale Longman who I worked with at CSIRO 91-94 on the list as well it goes to
show what
a small world we live in.

Anyway to your request.

I have William George Linto was born 1804 in England. William was married in
England
with two children possibly widowed but this is not always the case even
though William
married in WA. He was literate and practiced the Church of England religion.
He worked
as a ploughman when convicted at Bridgewater on the 3rd of July 1849 for
stealing a hive
of bees. This may be Bridgewater near Taunton in Somerset England. Having a
previous
conviction William was sentenced to 10 years. As was customary he would have
spent 11
months in solitary confinement. Which Gaol he was sent to after being
convicted can be
found in P.Com 2 files for UK Prisons held at Battye. It is very likely
though that he
was sent to newly built Portland (Island) Prison in Dorset near Weymouth
where convicts
were used to Quarry Portland Stione and could be loaded on ships for
Transport to WA.

In December 1850/January 1851 William was placed on the Convict Transport
Ship "Mermaid"

"Mermaid"
This 473 ton barque was built in Calcutta in 1817. It was employed as a
convict transport
and left Portsmouth, England on January 9, 1851 bound for the Swan River
Colony.

The Mermaid arrived at the colony at Swan River Settlement on the
????7th/13/21st of May 1851.

Upon William's arrival in Western Australia his details were taken and he
was given a
new convict number different to the one he would have had in the UK
Prison(s)? he was
confined at.

William George Linto WA convict number 211 sentenced to 10 years at
Bridgewater was 46 years
old married with two children occupation Ploughman physical description was
5 feet 3 inches
tall, hair dark brown, eyes grey, face round, complexion dark, had whiskers
and Fore and
middle finger of left hand broken.

Granted a Ticket of Leave on the 17th of February 1852 upon which he would
either be assigned
an employer in the specified district listed on the Ticket of Leave which he
could not leave, curfew of 6 pm and other Leave conditions or if without an
employer would stay at a government convict depot working on various works
projects.

In the Half yearly returns 1853 sent back to England from the Colonial
government is noted William Linto was granted permission to marry.
Correspondence letters from William to the
Governor are likely to be found in Battye Library CSO Inward bound
letters.William married in 1853 to Mary Reading b 1823/4 county Kerry in
Ireland daughter of John Reading and Mary O'Dea. Mary having arrived in WA
circa 1850. In 1854 they had their first child John. William Linto
was granted a Conditional Pardon on the 26th of January 1856 part of which
included he could
not return to England. That year a son William was born followed in 1857 by
another son Walter. In 1858 son Stephan was born.

Mike your lucky here the 1859 Census was like all others, destroyed except
for York. William
Linto is listed at York as a small farmer. In 1860 son George was born,
Daughter Mary in 1862, Bridget in 1864 (baptised at York Roman Catholic
