Hi Lorna ,
I am just going through the 'Voice of the Goldfields' that were going cheap
at last years Royal Show. Are you in Perth cos if you are you could try the
'West Australian ' newspaper shop. They may still have some left.
On checking your John Rafferty i found the only mention of him in the book
was on p56.it said:
Since 1897, when the Kal Miner first promoted the need for local circuit
courts, there had been several changes at Hocking and Co. In NOv 1898
sub-editor John Donaldson left to take up a similar position on a newspaper
in Perth.
At Donaldsons farewell function John Kirwan presented him with a travelling
bagand spoke of 'the splendid work done' by him in his two and half years at
the Kalgoorlie Miner. Kirwans sentiments were echoed in the other speeches
given by E. Thomas, J.Campbell, W.Beaumont, F. Kelsall, R. Dickie, & J.
Rafferty who were there as representatives of the different departments of
Hocking & Co.
John Kirwan was the editor that took up in Dec 1895. He was given some free
shares in the business also.
If you are in Perth a can't find a copy of the book i would happily loan my
copy to you to read. A very interesting story.
Liane

and apologies to all members if I have duplicated it now. I am new to the
list and only a temporary. I am researching my grandfather John RAFFERTY
who was a printer and who I believed help set up the printing side of the
Western Argus in Kalgoorlie. One of my treasures is a sepia photo in
reasonable condition with about seventy males in it. It is a studio photo
from "Joshua and Dwyer Kalgoorlie" . Unfortunately I don't know what the
role of these men and boys are but I think it must have something to do with
the newspaper as there are newspapers spread in front and "Western Argus"
can be made out on one paper.

anyone would like a copy of this I can scan it for you. If this is too long
I will make a couple of lists of the names that are printed at the bottom of
the photo. The people in the back row are rather faded but still better
than nothing!
