Hi Shane
I'm pretty sure that Pensioner Guards weren't necessarily old. My Pensioner
Guard, John Odgers was born c.1820 and came out as a Pensioner Guard in 185.
He was pensioned off in 1854 as he had a hernia (inoperable in those days, I
guess).

As far as I know pretty well all the guards were Pensioner Guards as the
Army was a bit busy with wars. (eg Crimean war 1856).

Broomhall's book may list him. Ask on the list if anyone has a copy they can
check for you.

Subject: [AUS-WA-PENSIONER-GUARDS] FLANAGAN

Hi,

I am researching my 3xGreat Grandfather Richard Flanagan. He came to WA
between 1856-1859. He was military and came with his wife and son to Perth.

Birth c1833 Fermoy, Cork, Ireland. I suspect he may have been a guard, but
probably too young to be a pensioner guard.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Regards,

Shane
