Dear group members,

I am researching on behalf of my Grandmother who is an orphan. She
desperately wants to know about father. I have been helping her for a few
years now and we have had no luck. She is not computer savvy so I thought I
would see what the web had to offer and saw this group - I'm hoping that WA
researchers may have some expert advice!

She would like to know why she was adopted out - her mother was deceased but
why did she not have contact with her father or any of his relatives.
Perhaops her father was deceased? She feels fortunate that she was adopted
by a relative of her mother so she knows something of her heritage. If she
can find out who her father is we'd like to trace his tree too.

* * * *

Here is my Nanna's background. Any suggestions are most welcome.

My grandmother was born Annie Frances CARTER She was known as Annie
HARRISON. The surname taken from the family of whom cared for her. The
family was a relative of her mother so she is satisfied with what she knows
about her mother.

My grandmother, Annie CARTER aka HARRISON was born 25 August 1919 in
Maylands, Western Australia. She was a twin. Her sister was named Winifred
CARTER.

Her parents are given as Annie DRISCOLL and Henry CARTER. They married in
Maylands 10 October 1915. Henry CARTER’s father is given as William CARTER,
a gardener. Mother details are blank. Residence was Maylands Hotel where
employed as barman. His age given means his birth year is 1872.

Her mother died 16 January 1920. She was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery,
Perth, Western Australian on 19 January 1920. Her twin sister, Winifred,
died 20 January 19203 and was also buried at Karrakatta Cemetery.

There is no record of her father dying at this time and there is no burial
entry in the Karrakatta Cemetery. My grandmother was given one photo of her
father dressed in military uniform. One the reverse is written 3015 Pte
Henry Carter 3rd Company Australian Pioneers.

>From this we were able to acquire Henry CARTER’s Attestation papers from the
Australian Archives. This provides some additional information.

Birthplace given is parish of Croyden, Surrey, England. Age given as 36 9/12
years. As papers are dated 27 Oct 1916, this would make his birth date in
Jan 1880. This is eight years younger than he claimed to be on his marriage
certificate. I am assuming that he lowered his age to ensure being accepted
for military service.

He has previous military service in the British military in the 7th
Fusiliers in Imperial Army for 6 years.

His current address in 1916 was Cox Street, Maylands. He was employed as
tram motorman. Next of kin was wife Annie Carter.

He survived his military service and was discharged from the army in June
1818 due to illness.

We would like to learn what happen to Henry CARTER after the birth of my
grandmother in 1919 and the death of her mother in 1920.
Did Henry CARTER ever marry again? Did she have uncles and aunts? Who were
her grandparents? How long did Henry Carter live after the birth of my
grandmother? Did he return to his native England?

Can anyone assist or give advise for finding more information. Or help with
locating the army records for his first military service for possible clues.

Any help would be most gratefully received.
