thank you for contacting me, The origin of the name Is [anglicised]
MACKINLAY, however one James "The Trooper" MACKINLAY, went to Ireland as a
scout with the army of William of Orange, and was victorious at the battle
of the Boyne,

James married and remained in Northern Ireland
The Irish spelling of the name is MCKINLEY and his descendants use that
spelling to-day; one of James' descendants became the first un-married
President of the U.S.

Do you have the Death certificate of your John Henry? from that we might be
able to guestimate his birth date,

Not all of the MCKINLEY'S are of Irish descent

The name was often mis-spelt by shipping clerk's etc

and the MacGregors used that name during their time of their name being
proscribed
