Following my two posts regarding cemeteries in the area I thought I would
try to provide an overview of the cemeteries in the area (that I have
located to date), following a number of further postings about the cemeteries.
* GREENSBOROUGH CEMETERY: Initially private, then public and taken over by
the Banyule Council as the cemetery trust in the 1970s.
* RIVER PLENTY: A small private cemetery in Greensborough, but only a
plaque noting burials for two local families - PARTINGTON/WHATMOUGH. I am
wondering if there "might" be more than than those listed. All that is
known is what is on the plaque. Will look at church records to see what I
can find out.
NOTE: Both of these cemeteries I have supplied information on and this
information can be read via each cemetery - Further Information, on the
webpage.
* St HELENA (St C/Katherine - both spellings noted): Records I have seen
started in 1855, but there might have been earlier burials. This cemetery
is not really in the current township of Greensborough area, but very close
and there might have been burials at it. St Katherines Anglican, St Helena
Historic Church, is located on St Helena Road (Melways: 11, E10&11). Both
the GSV [1855-1978 Memorial Inscriptions) and the AIGS (Burial Records)
have records for the cemetery there. This is one of the earliest church
cemeteries. This is a cemetery that I have not looked at yet so I have no
further information on it.
So these are three that I know of to date. Will keep researching and
post updates.
