Hi Julie;

I have sometimes found three different spellings for the same person
in the Registry Index CD, the headstone and the death certificate. In
theory the current version of the Victorian Pioneers Index had the
data taken directly from the death certificates, but this does not
take into account "human error" with transcription. I was part of
this process several years ago, but like you have located I have
found a number of different spelling from the headstone to the death
certificate. I tend to list both spellings in my database. I never
know in some instances which one is correct.

As an example with my research into McIntyre Burial ground I have the
spelling of Heraud (which I think is the correct one as I have the
marriage certificate and a copy of his Naturalisation papers in 1901)
but with some family certificates I have it spelt as Herand.

My thoughts are to record both.

cheers,

David
