Terry Crowley, 1920-2008

TERRY Crowley, was born in Laidley on October 2, 1920 to David and Cecelia and was the fourth of nine children.
Terry’s Grandfather and his family came from Ireland in the 1880’s and settled at Blenheim, Queensland.
Terry grew up on the family farm at Crowley Vale, near Lake Clarendon.
The name, Crowley Vale, came about as a result of the donation of land for a school by Terry’s father, Dave.
Terry’s mother, Cecilia, operated a post office from the family home and they had one of the first telephones in the area. Phone messages were relayed to the local farmers.
On the farm, onions, pumpkins, corns and Lucerne was grown. Terry worked on the farm with his father and elder brothers, Dan and Jim as well as looking after cattle on their Buaraba property
Terry also spent time assisting his father, Dave, as he did returned work in the local area. Many strong bonds were forged with the local families as a result of this work. Because of the shortage of cars at the time (1930’s) Terry later recalled of travelling to dances as far away as Coominya in the back of an open truck.
In 1937, Terry joined the Laidley light horse troops. This later merged with the Gatton Light Horse troops. Terry spoke of a meeting of 3,000 troops and their horses at Beaudesert and the crossing of the story bridge by a large troop of the light horse.
During the war, Terry was stationed at Beenleigh, Southport and other places in south east Queensland. The light horse was also involved in coast surveillance.
Terry was also stationed in Townsville where he was briefly under the authority of the Americans.
At the end of the war, terry worked in the Bowen area. He worked in a sugar mill and digging salt (re. turning salt from the sea.) In 1946 Terry and Kathleen were married at the Helidon Catholic Church
however their honeymoon was cut short by the sudden death of Terry’s mother.
Terry and Kathleen had four children together Terry, Maurice, Loretto and Paul.
A source of joy for Terry in the final two years of his life were the days he spent at the Laidley Blue Care Respite centre.
Sadly, Terry passed away on January 20 after a long battle with heart problems.
Terry, however lived a fulfilled life and accomplished many things that have made his children and family very proud of him. He wife always be remembered for his hard work and determination and all that he did for the Lockyer Valley.
