Karen,

Does the FHL Catalog CD number 50081 only have soldiers in the 1860's? I would be searching for a soldier who was in the Austrian/Hungarian military in the 1890's. Would CD number 50081 have this information on it?

Ed,

The LDS FHC catalog home CD lists 282 film titles for Szabolcs Megye.
There are 132 for Szatmar Megye. Civil muster lists, vital records and
church records are included.

It is well worthwhile to buy your own copy of the LDS CD and to do your
research at home so that you don't have to stand in line for a computer at
your FHC. It is only $5. Call 800 537 5971 and ask for the Family History
Library Catalog CD, item number 50081.

Men mustered in in 1862 may have served in the war in Denmark, 1864.
They most likely served in the war in Bohemia in 1866.

The LDS may have the records of his regiment on film. Otherwise the Vienna
Kriegsarchiv may have them since he served before 1868.

Records of soldiers who served after 1868 could be in Vienna and could be in
Bratislava or Budapest or the archives of other nations that were carved out
of Hungary in 1917.

Theodor Fontane mentions a Hungarian regiment in his history of the war of
1864 (in German). Geoff Wawro's book (English) on the war of 1866 is from
the Austrian point of view and may have more information about the Hungarians
who served in that War. Geoff was teaching at the Naval War College in
October of 2000 and may still be there. His book is still in print, is $60
retail.

There are some Internet sites that tell about the war in Denmark in 1864 in
English. I am sorry, I don't have a URL. You might find it with a keyword
like Denmark 1864. You will not find any regiments mentioned by number but
you will find a good summary of why there was a war, where the major battles
were and how it ended.

Write to Dr. Tepperberg at the War Archive with one simple question at the
web site: Austrian Military Service. Ask what Hungarian regiments were
recruited in the district that included your ancestral birthplace (name the
place) in 1862. It would be a good idea to also give the name of the place
that served as the Megye center or some other indicator that will make the
place VERY EASY to locate on a map. A major city nearby (give the name in
German if it had a German name because that is the way it will appear on
recruiting maps).

It is necessary to do this "homework" if you hope to get an answer. If Dr.
Tepperberg has to chase down the location of the birthplace he may never find
the time to help you.

After you know the regiment(s) -- Infantry, Jager Battalion, Hussar or other
-- you can either write to Vienna for a copy of his record or see what is
available at the LDS on film.

There are some rare maps of the Austrian Empire (it was not the A-H dual
monarchy until about 1867-1868) showing recruiting districts. There are also
lists of regiments in the army with their headquarters and recruiting
stations in old Austrian Army publications. The war archive will send you
these lists The Militar Schematismus on film at the LDS is one that might
help you select a possible regiment for your district if you select one that
is dated between 1860 and 1870.

The number of regiments increased in 1860 and that affected the size of some
districts and changed numbers in others.

If the LDS does not have his individual soldier's record it could still be in
Vienna or on film but it has not yet been cataloged by the LDS. The LDS
catalog on the Internet is updated about once a year but a new CD for FHC use
or one for home use is not issued that often. The Internet catalog
(FamilySearch.com) is locality based and really tough to search because
Austrian regiments do not have a locality named in their titles. The home CD
has a search engine that allows keywords and it is very easy to navigate by
comparison. You have to spell search words in the proper language to use
either catalog.

Infantry = infanterie; Regiment = Regiment; Army = Armee; Austria =
Osterreich;
Hungary = Ungarn, etc.

If you write to Vienna be sure to enclose 2 or more International Payment
Coupons (IPC) in your letter. You may not get a reply if you don't include
them. It will take six weeks or longer to get a reply. I have heard of
some instances where it took six months or longer.

There are some professional researchers who will assist you in Vienna if you
are willing to pay their fees (up to $40 per hour). I have not visited the
Kriegsarchiv web site for a long time but I think I recall that they had the
names and Edresses of some of the researchers on one page there. I usually
find it with keyword: Kriegsarchiv Vienna or Staatsarchiv Vienna (Wien, in
German).
