HI gang!
It occured to me that I have neglected to mention one of my interests in
Ayrshire. This would be an offshoot from my main ROWAN line.
George ROWAN (b 1839) in Sanquhar, Dumfrieshire. He moved to Kilmarnock,
Ayrshire, probably in the late 1860's. His Wife was Agnes SIMPSON (b
1843). George was a Carpet Foreman, a skill he learned at the mill in
Sanquhar. Their children were Jane R. (1866), Mary (1868), William
(1871), Hannah (1873), James S.(1875) Robert R.T.(1877) Thomas and John
S. both listed in the 1881 census as being 1 year old (twins?) and Agnes
S. who was 2 months old in the census. All the children were born in
Kilmarnock. Agnes SIMPSON came from Galston in Ayr.
George ROWAN's brother, Thomas, is my GGGrandfather. My brother and I
are the last of the line to still carry the ROWAN name (and I have all
daughters!). If there are any descendants of George who still have the
ROWAN name they would be my closest kin with that name. I would be very
happy to make contact with anyone working on George's line.
Until I saw this family in the census it seemed rare that people had
"middle" names. When did the custom of "middle" names start in Scotland?
Was it more prevelant in Ayrshire?
Happy Hunting everyone!
David Rowan
