If you haven't done already, contact your local registry office to
obtain a copy of the leaflet "Registration: Modernising a vital
service". The ONS are reviewing the current system for the civil
registration of births, marriages and deaths. One of the most impotant
questions for genealogists regards whether older records, for example
over 100 years old, should be made publicly available. According to the
leaflet the ONS wants to hear from members of the public. We are being
given our opportunity, let's use it.

You can also look at a consultation document regarding this at
http://www.ons.gov.uk

If you want to comment then write to:

Review of Civil Registration
Office for National Statistics
Room 120
Smedley Hydro
Trafalgar House
Southport
PR8 2HH

You need to submit your comments by the 6th of December.

IMHO we shouldn't have to buy certificates to find out the names of our
ancestors. This information should be made freely available. I can
understand recent records not being released, but why should details of
people who lived over one hundred years ago still be kept behind closed
doors.
