Hi Emil,

Was there any additional information in the wedding entry? Often if one
person is not from that parish, they will name which parish they came
from.

Have you checked his headstone in Canada? Often they mention where
they came from originally. What about a will? Have you checked for
siblings to see where they were born? If you had the names of his
parents from another source it would make him easier to trace. If you
find either siblings or parents that remained behind then check the
later census records and death certificates for them.

Have you checked the surrounding parishes? There is a map of the
parishes from the Ayrshire GenWebPage and from Ayrshire GENUKI.

Have you checked the IGI which is available online although not all
records have been added to it yet or checked the Scottish OPRs on CD at
your nearest Mormon FHC to see where if any Gilbert Alexanders were
born? What about Canadian immigration records? As far as I know there
are very few passenger lists prior to 1865, so not much use to you.
Some of them are indexed with the US arrivals by Filby, 11 vols plus
supplements. After 1865, there are passenger lists available, but
unindexed. Lists into Quebecare from 1865-1919 and into Halifax from
1881-1919, and then some intosmaller ports from 1900 to about 1920.

Although there has been changes to the local councils and what areas
they cover over time, there is, as far as I know, no change made to the
parish boundaries. Anyone know different?

Happy Hunting.

regards

Alex
