Tom,

There were three McLelland families listed in the 1841 Stevenson census
- they all had a son Hugh although only one of these was close to the
age you gave.

1841 Stevenson census, book 4, page 9 at Boglemont
Alexander McLelland aged 49, a coal miner; Mary, 35; William, 15, a coal
miner; Alexander, 12, a coal miner; Garven, 10; Hugh, 6; Margaret, 5 and
Mary, 1. All were born in the county.

1841 Stevenson census, book 3, page 9 at New Street
Hugh McLelland, 50, a coal miner; Grizel, 44; James, 15, a coal miner;
John, 14, a coal miner; Matthew, 10, a coal miner; Margaret, 8; David,
6; Grizel, 4 and Hugh, 8 months; All were born in the county.

1841 Stevenson census, book 3, page 17 at New Street
William McLelland, 20, a coal miner; Agnes, 20; Hugh, 2, and John, 1
month. All were born in the county.

These were the only McLellands in the county. I wondered if perhaps
William was a son of Hugh or Alexander and if they were maybe brothers
or cousins.

You may well not find a birth entry for Hugh as not all births were
recorded in the old parish registers, for a number of reasons. Sometimes
some of the children appear which can at least help place the family.

Hope this helps.
