Hello Eleanor,
I just found out on the weekend that my grandfather, Robert Thom(p)son
NEILSON had a brother Matthew NEILSON who homesteaded in the
Bowden/Innisfail area of Alberta. All I know is their family came from
Glasgow area. I have not done much work on my NEILSON roots yet.
Apparently my uncle Donald FOOTE NEILSON, son of Robert, collected a
considerable amount of family history before he passed away in the early
1990s. My mother has promised to locate this information and give it to me.
I'll keep your address so that I can contact you with more information once
I have it.
Cheers, Ann

Hello,
I'm a newcomer to the Ayrshire Digest. I'm hoping that someone can help
me find any information - census, birth, marriage, death - about Matthew
Neilson BOWMAN.
I have two ancestors named Matthew Neilson BOWMAN : my grandfather and
great grandfather.
My grandfather, Matthew Neilson BOWMAN, was born about 1884 in
Kilmarnock. His parents were Matthew Neilson BOWMAN and Isabella
BRYCE. He lived in Kilmarnock but at some point moved to Irvine and
married there. He married Jeanie McINNES in June of 1904 or 1905.
During WWI he joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers. In 1917 he was wounded
and captured by the Germans. He spent the remainder of the war as a
prisoner and was forced to work in a salt mine.
My great grandfather, Matthew Neilson BOWMAN, was also born in
Kilmarnock as far as I know. He was born circa 1850 and died in 1933.
It is my understanding that his mother's maiden name was NEILSON. I
think that he lived on Douglas St. and was a stone mason by trade. He
was married to Isabella BRYCE and had at least 8 children: Matthew,
Isabella, twins - John and Jemima -, Agnes, Kate, Mary and Jean.
I am interested in learning anything I can about the above families, and
if at all possible, to go back as far as I can in tracing my family . I
initially joined the rootsweb Northumbria site to trace my English roots
and was astounded by the amount of information I was able to get. I'm
hoping to enjoy a similar success in Ayrshire!
It has been so exciting to watch my family history come together. I
realize how much time and effort volunteers put into helping searchers
such as myself, so please be assured that your work is deeply
appreciated.
Regards,
Eleanor Clouter
