Hi Graham

The Estate of Auchincruive and the adjoining lands of Mainholm and Braehead
were acquired by the Oswald's in 1764 till 1925. In 1766 Auchincruive Coal
Works were being managed by a Richard Doak. The Auchincruive pits had
become worked out before 1870.

There were only limited developments possible in coal mining in the
immediate vicinity of Ayr. The local coalmaster was John Taylor GORDON who
operated Ayr Colliery Company on the Estates of Newton, Blackhouse,
Sanquhar, and Auchincruive. Around 1850 new pits were being worked at
Wheatpark, Fulshawood, Gibsyard, Laigh Thorneyflat, and beside Oswald
Bridge. Gordon had faced some resistance for developing the coal resources
at Auchincruive by the landowner Alexander Oswald.

Regards

Olive
