Subject: Help with the name of a town

Could some kind and knowledgeable lister help me with a puzzle concerning a town or village. My great grandmother lived in Dunbartonshire at the time of the 1871 census, but gave her birthplace as Ayrshire. Her name was Janet Morton and I want to know if there is a place in Ayrshire called New Hill or New Hills or if this is a confusion on the part of the census taker for Newmilns? Also, where in Ayrshire would I find Newmilns? I live in Sydney, Australia, but have a Motoring Atlas of Britain which is an Ordnance Survey. Help please?
