7 March 1939 8 St. Cuthbert St. Catrine from Lizzie to Annie
No doubt you will be wondering at me not writing but Ive had
another attack of sickness and Dr. had to be called in. It started with a
severe cold and I just seemed to go down. Dr. said no wonder as the weather
was so awful. We never had the like of it. The snow at the back was up to
the slates, one just was glad to keep in bed warm so I was 3 weeks in bed
but Ive never been out as it is so damp now after the frost up till
yesterday. The vae was always covered it was very sore on everyone
especially old people and it has taken toll of quite a number. You will
have mind of George Summit. He was buried on Tuesday so there is just His
daughter left. The minister was in and He was telling me that was the 5th
Elder since he came over 5 years ago these new houses are not suited to
such weather and quite a lot of trouble has been up there and Charlie
Hendrie has passed on he was 82. John left some time ago to go out to them.
They asked him to come as He had no one so they would make sure they would
get all he had. He said before he went away he would not be back. It was in
Victoria, Australia. I will miss George once they are going to Renfrew. The
house has been sold in Mauchline so Jessies sister has a house there and
unless one comes and occupies it herself they could not put them out-it was
taken at the time of the decontrolling? so she is coming home and has asked
them to stay as she cant be herself it would be too lonely. He has been out
doing the Garden to prepare for vegetables as we are father scarce of them.
I dont remember if I said that Mary Youngs mother had died, Ive not had
any more word. If I had been well I would have went down but it is too
severe weather.
