Hi there

I have a book on 'Scotland's Place Names' written by David Dorward which
give quite good details on most place names. However, Kilbowie is not one
of them - sorry.

The first 2 paras. though deal with the abbreviation 'KIL' and says:

"Although St Columba may not have been the first to bring Christianity to
Scotland (St Ninian had ministered to the southern Picts some centuries
before), it was the Irish missionaries who left their mark on our place
names. St Columba, the most famous of them, has lent his name to at least
fifty places on the modern map of Scotland - see under 'colm'.

The Celtic church was monastic in character (unlike the diocesan church of
Rome) and in its early days spread by the establishment of cells - not
unlike Communism in recent years. The Gaelic word for cell is 'ceall', in
its dative form 'cill'; and it is this word that appears as 'kil' in many
hundreds of names in south-west Scotland."

If you wish further info. on this please e-mail me as it continues on and
explains in more detail the various places that have 'Kil' as their prefix.
