Taken from "Place Names of Dumbartonshire" by John Irving FSA., Scot. 1928.
---------
KILBOWIE ----- CULTBOVY 1273. from Gaelic, cul buidhe - yellow back of the hill.
---------
( The year 1273 seems to refer to the 1st time that Cultbovy was either recorded or heard of)

I was wondering if yellow back of the hill meant where the sun shone on it. The steep part of
Kilbowie Road to the brow of the hill, faces towards the south, which would get the sun here in
Scotland.

Jack.
