To add to yesterday's post, I found the birth record of Thomas Dobbie, my grandfather. He was known to have been b. on 19 May 1885. He was known to have been raised by his maternal grandparents. His biological father was a Livingstone, who has been identified yet. He was born in New Cumnock, his grandmother, Elisabeth McQueen's hometown. Margaret was only 18 yrs. old at the time. What a delicate age for such a burden.
I found the birth on Scotlandspeople, and it stated he was illegitimate, and his mother was Margaret Dobbie, listed as a farm servant. Doesn't sound very desirable. This ended the debate as to which daughter of Thomas Dobbie and Elisabeth McQueen was the mother, Margaret or Mary. By elimination, Mary is the one who married a Burns, and had at least three sons, David, Thomas, and Alexander in 1886, 1889, and 1892, respectively.
I did find Elisabeth McQueen's birth on Scotlandspeople as well. She was the dau. of James McQueen and Margaret Templeton, b. Oct. 6, 1842 in New Cumnock. We knew Oct. 1842, but not the date. This was a treat, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a birth for Thomas Dobbie b. Sept. 1841 in Maybole.
Nor have I been able to find a marriage record at Scotlandspeople for Thomas Dobbie and Elisabeth McQueen. On the birth record of one of their children, it states they were married in Dalmellington, Sept. 25, 1863, as it also states on the IGI, but for some reason I can't bring it up on scotlandspeople. Any one have any pointers??
I believe I found James McQueen and his wife Margaret Templeton on the 1851 census for Ayrshire, and also Thomas Dobbie as a child, but don't know which are his parents.
Any clues, pointers, or referrals greatly appreciated, and many thanks to ecunningham for her suggestions.
I'm descended from Cunningham family too, but haven't been able to make the connection from the U.S. to U.K. yet.
Best,
