Subject: Held Needed Now for Archives Building
Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 08:58:41 -0700

Dear Friends -

It is crunch time for the proposed state archives building.
We have a small window opportunity to get the building funded
this year. We need your help to contact legislators. At the
bottom of this message is a sample letter. Please send a similar
letter, or contact the legislators below by e-mail or phone.

Here is the message:

Any budget that does not include the archives building should
be rejected. Do not vote for a budget that does not include the
building. Failure to fund the building this year so ground can
be broken in July of 2005 means the money spent to prepare the
plans and drawings will be wasted. Any delay means more historic
documents will be lost and the eventual solution will be more
expensive. Solve the crisis now, not later.

RE: Please Hold Out for Including State Archives Building in Budget

Dear Senator / Representative «LastName»:

I am writing to you because of your strong support for the State Archives
building in the past. Today, I am asking you to make the State Archives
building one of your priorities in the budget. Simply put, if Leadership
does not hear that this is a priority for your constituents, they will forego
the authorization again, which will cost taxpayers like me more money in
the future.

The citizens of Arizona have waited more than twenty years __since 1983__
for a solution to the crisis facing the State Archives. Arizona cannot
wait any longer. Each year of delay means more and more historic resources
are lost. Each year of delay means the eventual solution will be more costly.

Using funds authorized by the Legislature in 2004, the state has just spent
$2 million to prepare plans and specifications for the new building. A
site is already owned and earmarked by the state for the building. Things
are ready to go. Ground for the new building could be broken as soon as
July 1, 2005.

Any delay now would mean the existing plans would be obsolete by the time
construction started. The plans would have to be re-done if funding for
the building is delayed past this year.

Please insist that any budget adopted by the Legislature this year include
funds for the State Archives building. Funding could be a line item appropriation
of $35.7 million or as little as $3.3 million annually with the lease to
own option and the expected cost savings with more space. We are counting
on you to convince your colleagues that the time is now to finish the job.
Any budget that does not include funds for the State Archives building
should be rejected.

Sincerely,

Your Name
