Subject: [AZ-ARCHIVES-FRIENDS] Governor asks for cut in Archives Buildingfunding
Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 18:01:10 -0700
Friends -
Governor Napolitano has recommended that $3.5 million be cut
from the budget of the State Archives building, currently under
construction on the west side of 19th Avenue near the capitol.
This will have a negative impact on the new building. You can
find the Governor's recommendation here (see p. 13):

We are asking supporters of the State Archives building to contact
the Governor and ask her to spare the project from budget cuts.
Go to this page for information on how to contact the Governor:

Below is some sample language you can use in your message to the
Governor. Please take action soon; any reduction in funds will
delay and hamper this needed project.

Dear Governor Napolitano:
I was disappointed to learn that the FY 2008 Budget Management Plan developed
by your office contains a recommendation to cut $3.5 million from the Polly
Rosenbaum State Archives and History building. The building is currently
under construction, on budget, and is expected to be completed on time in
May of 2008.
Cutting $3.5 million from the budget of the State Archives building at this
time would be very short sighted. It is also a disservice to the many Arizona
citizens that worked extremely hard over a number of years to get funding
for the building.
It is short sighted because cutting funds for the building at this late stage
would mean that things such as shelves and furniture would have to be eliminated.
The building could not open on time and would have to stand vacant. It
is a disservice to the citizens of Arizona that worked closely with the legislature
to determine the scope and cost of the building. Citizens labored to get
funding approval, which came slowly: $2 million in 2004, $30 million in
2005, and $8 million in 2006. This last-minute cut erases years of hard
work.
In order to write the story of Arizona mentioned in your state of the state
address, our citizens will need access to the documents of government. Cutting
funds to the building will deprive them of that ability, now and in the future.
Sincerely,
-------------
