In Wyoming, the Italian prisoners were allowed to work with the loggers in
the forest (with supervision).
I believe they were very well liked----did a lot of singing, etc. Many, many
of them also immigrated to America after the war. It's amazing how open
these prisoner of war camps were. In Wyoming they only had two "leave" who
were gratefully picked up the next day. On Mt. Graham, near Safford, I think
they may have had some try to walk away---but I'm not sure.
