While some of the nation's most important original documents and their surroundings are being restored, the National Archives will offer unique views of its holdings and operations to the public. The Rotunda will be closed until 2003 while the building and its contents— the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights—are renovated. Meanwhile, a new "ReSource Room" at the archives building in Washington, DC, opens Oct. 9, allowing small groups to go behind the scenes. This hands-on learning center will show visitors how documents are preserved and made available to the public at NARA. Call (202) 501-5205 to reserve your space on a tour.
Also, the archives' roadshow of "American Originals" debuts in New York City this weekend. This showcase of original documents that charted the course of American history will be on display at the New York Public Library until Jan. 5, 2002. You'll be able to see the official voting record of the 1787 Continental Convention, the Louisiana Purchase Treaty of 1803, the deed of the gift of the Statue of Liberty and John F. Kennedy's handwritten draft of his 1961 inaugural address. The library also will display "The Public's Treasures: Americana from the New York Public Library" in conjunction with the NARA exhibit. For more information, call (212) 869-8089 or see the library's Web site at http://www.nypl.org/.
