Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is the first time that I've come up on this list as my usual Family
History haunts are Devon, Somerset, and Dorset in England as well as the
Mariners List. However, a very good friend of my wife and I knew we were
interested in Family History and when we were staying with him this last
weekend, brought out a veritable feast of old photos, documents, wills, and
Indentures of Mortgage, right back to 1832, that had been in the attic.
The reason that I have come to your list is that his father was said to be
born in Pearce, Cochise, Arizona, on 28 July 1899, and baptised at the
"Methodist Episcopal Church, Pearce". His name was James Dewey Harris and his
parents were James Harris and Mary Hannah Harris, (nee Jeffrey), from Cornwall,
England. Parents are supposed to have been married 1st June 1898 in Benson (?),
father being a mining Captain from Camborne in Cornwall. We believe that the
whole family returned to UK in 1901 or 2.
I'm afraid my knowledge of your area is woefully lacking and I would be very
grateful for any information on the region for my friend, so we can show him
what a great bunch of people genealogists are!!!
For instance, is Benson anywhere near Pearce? Was mining a particular
industry in either area that people would have journeyed from UK to such work?
Can anyone shed any light on how an English girl, (we think from Cornwall) came
to marry another Cornishman so far from home? Would there be any records of
mining that could be researched to see when James Harris (father) arrived in
Pearce? Would there be any records in the church either of the marriage or the
baptism that could be checked?
We both would be very grateful for any shreds of information that could be
gleaned on these past events.
Thanks in advance,
Martin Southwood in Essex, England
