Hi Everyone, hope you had a grand Thanksgiving and are all getting ready for
Christmas.
Here is a chuckle for you...some of you know that I have Poodles, 4 to be
exact. And two of them fight all the time so I can't leave them together
without me being there. We went to Laughlin for Thanksgiving and the dogs
stayed in the truck and were as good as gold. I took the little in the room
with us.. How did I get her there.. in a red canvas tote bag that zips
shut. She gets in the bag and lets me zip it up and off we go.. We are
walking with her in the bag with the strap over my shoulder and I tell my
husband, " Can you believe this the dog is snoring, what am I going to do"
Luckily in the casino there was enough noise but not in the elevator or the
hallways but we made it..... Snoring of all things... ;-))
Now down to business.
There are a couple of things that I want to bring to your attention or again
remind you.
ARTICLE II. PURPOSE
Section 1. The USGenWeb Project is an organized group of volunteers working
to create an online center for genealogical research by linking every county
in the United States. *The purpose of this organization shall be to gather
genealogical and historical information for free online access by
researchers *
Section 2. *This purpose shall be accomplished by presenting websites which
shall be central repositories of historical and genealogical research data,
donated either by the website coordinator or other contributors. In
presenting this information, the foundation of the organization shall be at
the local websites (county, township, parish, town, etc.) which shall be
linked to the state websites which shall be linked to the national website.
The USGenWeb Project shall also provide a "digital library" called The
USGenWeb Project Archives. *
**
I feel that it is VERY important that we all understand the above and know
that our volunteers are the foundation of our project. Without them, we
wouldn't be able to gather all the information ourselves. I strongly
believe that the county pages are the root of the project and then
information can be added to what ever special projects there are within the
USGenWeb. But I strongly feel that the repositories should be the county.
The other thing, please remember this is a "free" project and so when a
volunteer submits information for our websites, we as coordinators MUST add
this information to our county web sites. Also, remember that when a
volunteer submits information for the site that information stays with the
site if you should give your county up for adoption, You can take your own
information off the site if you choose to do so but volunteer information
stays with the site.
Genealogy and Historical Societies.
If a volunteer takes the time and their money to gather information for a
county site I don't want there to be a conflict with the AZGenWeb and the
societies. You are allowed to advertise your society on an inside page, you
can also advertise their membership and what their research fees are but
remember that has to be done on an inside page and you can link to it from
the main page of your site.
I have heard this over the years that some coordinators who have GenWeb
sites and are also affiliated with societies refuse to put information on
their site as it "takes" from the societies. You have to make your own
choice here, you are either a member of the USGenWeb and will abide by their
by-laws or you are a member of the society but there just isn't room for
both on the web sites.
We had a problem in IA and one of the counties, was so to speak, getting
robbed of their information. There is nothing you can do about other people
taking from your site and benefiting from it. If it is public record then
anyone can help themselves and say they gathered the information. The only
way that you can catch them for copyright violation is to purposely make a
mistake in your transcription and catch the thief in the act as a set up.
We had a man who took information off the county site and published it in a
book and sold the book while the volunteers did all his foot work. There is
nothing you can do about it so please put your submitted information on your
web sites.
You might also take a look at this page

Sometime after the first of the year Sundee and I will be doing a review of
the counties as it is required of us to do.
If you have any questions about the above, I am here until Thursday so
please post to the list.
We again have two counties up for adoption: Santa Cruz and Coconino if you
know of someone who wants to join us here in AZ please let them know we have
two interesting counties available.
Thanks for taking the time to read this...
