Hello all . . .
Sorry that my work schedule change was timed wrong time to catch this thread
sooner. Hopefully, you can appreciate suddenly having to work 10 days
straight not leaving much energy for anything else.
To Bonnie Gilson . . .
You have my thanks for *speaking up* when you did. Your explanation was
absolutely correct. All lists (and worse, the List Admins) have been
bombarded with SPAM since RootsWeb/Ancestry brought up the new Message Board
System. They are diligently working on the problem and, as with our normal
List mail, they expect to put filters in place to intercept these SPAM
postings to our Message Boards. Until then, I ask your indulgence and use
of your delete key. I personally delete upwards of 75 plus to my mailbox
daily and as many as I can catch on the boards, as well.
I assure you this situation is temporary and shouldn't be cause for *anyone*
unsubscribing. RootsWeb had SPAMMING under control with the old GenConnect
Boards and I've every confidence they will bring the new system into line,
too. In fact, RW staffers are constantly monitoring the boards and deleting
this SPAM, just as we Board Admins do. Unfortunately, none of this prevents
SPAM getting to a List who's "gateway" is open right now. The posting is on
it's way to the list nearly as soon as it's posted.
Now . . . I *can* request the gateway be closed but do you really want to
have to monitor board postings separately? I don't. I appreciate the
time-savings the gateway provides. Personally, while SPAM is getting
*through*, I haven't seen enough on any of my 150 plus lists to warrant
closing the gateway or being concerned about.
If anyone has a differing opinion, I'd like to hear it but send it
*off-list*, please. We don't need to waste bandwidth, fill up the archives
or generally get some of our membership upset with non-topical threads.
You'll find I'm a rather informal List Admin with a great deal of tolerance
except for a few topics such as virus or SPAM discussion, flaming, promotion
of personal ventures and/or commercial enterprise or generally being rude or
argumentative to other members and spoiling the tone and intent of the List.
Typically, you won't hear from me unless I have something I feel will
contribute to the discussion, have information or sources to share or I must
step in to stop an unacceptable thread that is eroding the List. That said,
let's get back what we're all here for . . . to help each other with family
history and research. If anyone feels strongly, pro or con, about the
*gateway*, I'll certainly entertain a change with a majority opinion . . .
but off-list.
