Hi Linda - In the 1931 Phoenix City Directory is "Converse, Ralph De W (short for De Witt perhaps?)(Ida)(spouse) barber supply (occupation) 28 N 1st (business address) h (head of household - could also include children under age 18 at home) 1209 E Pierce (residence)". There is no phone listed, no occupation or employer for Ida, and they are listed as renting. They are likely to be in the upcoming release of the 1930 census on April 1, 2002, and perhaps in voter registration rolls for Maricopa.
In the 1935 directory same basic listing, Ralph listed as a middle initial "D.", residence now 2209 Mitchell. They are shown as renting.
In the 1941 directory same basic listing, Ralph listed as President of Converse Beauty and Supply, Inc. of same business address. New residence address is out of town at Route 6, Box 498. There is no way to determine property ownership from this directory for Rural Box addresses, but given change in business status, it appears they were becoming more prosperous and may now be property owners. They are reseasonably certain to be found in the 1940 census when released in 2012, and the Arizona Corporation Commission records, and now perhaps property tax/land records. Rural Route 6 is not described in the 1941 directory, but in the 1931 directory it is noted as 1 of 10 Rural postal routes, Rural Route 6 being north of central Phoenix and east of Central Avenue.
In the 1945 directory, the listing is basically the same except the business is now located at 343 North 1st Avenue and the residence is better defined as North Central Avenue along with the RR and Box number being the same.
In the 1955 directory, they are gone. The business is still there, same name, same address, but with new owners. The Corporation Commission could help you pinpoint when they sold the business and possibly some forwarding address was left with the Commission as well.
Good luck and Happy Hunting.
