Hi Dana -

In my 1945 Phoenix City Directory there is no listing for any surname STEFANSKI.

My next directory in my collection is 1955, and on page 1518, right column, is "Stefanski Bernard H (Henrietta)(spouse) 2 (2 children under age 18 at that address) H (H = owner of that address - property tax and land records exist) emp (employee) Reynolds (employer) h (head of household) 308 W Coolidge (residence) AM 5-2693 (residence phone)".

This is the only listing for Stefanski in the directory, there is no restaurant by that name. "Reynolds" is Reynolds Metal (Aluminum products) Company, 3501 W Van Buren at 35th Avenue. Archival personnel records may still exist that might be available to family members.

My next directory is 1957 and on page 1656, right column, is "Stefanski Bernard R (Henrietta C) 2 H prs hlpr (occupation - press helper) Reynolds h 6127 N 11th St CR 4-8193". Here you have his wifes middle initial, still 2 children at home, occupation defined, new address and phone, still in property tax and land records. Only Stefanski in the book and no restaurant listing.

Next is 1959, page 1736, right column, the listing is the same as 1957 except his wifes middle initial is not listed and he is not shown as being employed or with an occupational description. Perhaps during this era he was starting a restaurant or was between jobs. Still 2 children under age 18 at home.

My next is 1960 and there is no Stefanski listing. My collection of city directories ends with 1960, but I have a 1975 Phoenix Metro phone book and there is no listing for Stefanski in that book either. It appears they may have left the Phoenix metro area sometime after 1959. They could, of course, still be in Arizona, but it doesn't look like Phoenix.

If you contact the Phoenix City Library and and see if they can "look back" for you from 1955 (beginning with 1954) you can ascertain when they came to Phoenix and perhaps whether there was a restaurant someplace in the era 1946 to 1954.

Good luck in your search.
