In the several recent postings about graffiti, I don't recall anyone
mentioning the graffiti at the dock in Horta, Faial. I'd forgotten about
it until I read this passage in Sue Fagalde Lick's recently published
novel, "Azorean Dreams":
"They came out onto a broad boulevard along the edge of the marina.
Boats of all sizes bobbed in their moorings, many of them tied up to a
huge wall on which letters were scribbled.
"'What's all that?'
"'The wall? Sailors used to believe, and some still do, that if you
leave a message on the wall before you go out to sea, you will have good
luck.'
"'It reminds me of our graffiti.'
"'But it is good graffiti.'"

I was wondering if people are still inscribing comments on that pier?
They must've run out of room by this time.
Incidentally, if anyone is interested, Sue Lick's novel is quite good,
its setting being "Little Portugal" in San Jose, California. It's
obtainable through www.iuniverse.com. A very talented professional
writer, her maternal Souza grandparents came from Faial.
