I would say it was probably after 1883 that my ggrandfather was married. I
do know that Mariano stood for Mario and that Cardao was a nickname meaning
"weaver" since that was their trade. I will try to find my grandfather,
Antonio Furtado's birth certificate and see if Mariano is on it.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Linda,
I noticed that the microfilms of marriage records of Ribeira Grande for both
churches, Nossa Senhora da Estrela (Matriz) and Nossa Senhora da Conceição,
only go till the date of 1883.
If your ggrandfather Mariano married after 1883 we will not find him on the
microfilm. As you know the marriage record is the most important tool in our
researches because we only know the surname used by our ancestor when we see
what the priest wrote on the marriage record.
But there´s something good about the prename and the nickname of your
ggrandfather. I guess Mariano is not a common name and so is the nickname
Cardao (Cardão?). We never know but in case the father of Mariano also used
this nickname maybe we can find his parents on the baptism records.
Um abraço,
Manoel César Furtado
