Hello All,
You know what .... I took the Copper State Journal's Storyteller's suggestion
and last week when the weather was still heavenly, I took an out-of-state
guest to Fort Lowell. I'm ashamed to say, it was my first visit there -- but
it won't be my last.
The grounds of the old fort are now a park, but remnants of the original
buildings are still standing and have informative plaques. The museum in
housed in two buildings which look to be the original officer's quarters.
The park also includes picnic benches, a duck pond, swimming pool, play
ground equipment, exercise trail and modern restrooms -- my friend and I only
used the former and the latter and I can recommend both. :-)
The photo display "Images of Resistance" in the museum annex building is
absolutely wonderful. Reportedly a temporary exhibit, it is no longer
temporary. The curator intends to keep and even expand it. The entrance to
the annex is a small unmarked door in the west wall facing Craycroft. In the
main building (entrance is in the center of the north wall) there are
exhibits about the life of the soldiers and their families which are very
well done. I only mention the location of the doors, because I had trouble
finding them and got caught by the curator with my nose plastered up against
the window, that just happened to be his office.
So -- watch the weather reports and get that picnic basket ready -- and get
away from it all someday. Seeing how they lived at Fort Lowell over a
hundred years ago will even make our harried lives today seem to be a
blessing.
Regards,
Barbara
