EFFIHGHAM, Jr.
Col. Richard TOWNLEY, 8th son of Richard TOWNLEY went to America in the
suite of Lord Effingham HOWARD, Governor of Virginia, in the year 1683.
He settled in Elizabethtown, NJ. Col. Richard TOWNLEY was one of the
Privy Council of Deputy Governor Lord Niel CAMPBELL in 1686. He left two
sons, Charles and Effingham. NOTE: This is listed as the 7th. generation.
No Richard TOWNLEY appears in generations 4 thru 6(OLS).
3rd. Gen: Richard Townley, Esq. son of Nicholas, was reader of Grays Inn,
in the 4th. year of the reign of HENRY VIII. His wife was Margaret, dau
John CLARK of Wazley, by which marriage royalty came into the TOWNLEY
family.
2nd. Gen: Nicholas TOWNLEY, 3rd. son of John, Esq., lived in the country
of the Palatine, of Lancaster. His wife was Elizabeth, dau Richard
CATTERAL, Esq. of Catteral, reliet of William TEMPEST, Esq. Lord of the
Manor of Broughton.
1st. Gen: JOHN TOWNLEY, Esq. was born in England in the year 1400.
The foregoing account of the TOWNLEY family (1st. 7 generations (4 thru
6 not included in this Email)(OLS)) was sent to this country in 1769 by
Charles Townley CLARENCE of London, Knight York Herald and King of Arms.
Note: I omitted sections of the TOWNLEY genealogy that did not contain
ancestors of Elsie TOWNLEY and took the liberty of using abbreviations,
etc. However, I was careful not to "correct" anything, even if it
appeared questionable or wrong. Nothing appeared wrong except the
missing Richard, father of the Col. which I would expect to find in
generation 6. Richard and Effingham were very popular given names in the
TOWNLEY family.
Cousin Orville
