I have an update on the subject. It was, in fact, a rift. I don't feel it is appropriate to share the info publically since I only heard one side of it through family history. It was interesting and finding tidbits like this makes the research that much more fun.
Here is something related that I will share. I found it to be interesting indeed. I corrected one of the names on your list of children of James Robert from A. G. to Agee. This is not a typical Bain name (not Robert, Charles, Andrew, Cicero, etc). Agee was the surname of the lawyer who handled the case for James Robert Bain.
