HI All the NC Baird searchers,
Still no exciting news on my NY Bairds, but keep finding the NC ones! Found
this dusty old book on the Univ library shelf. No index :(
Aloha, Cheryl
Rhinelanders on the Yadkin by Hammer, pub. 1943
pg 29: One must not suppose, however that all the Germans helf themselves
entirely allof from public life. Even in the earliest days a few began to
assume their places as prominent citizens. Among these was Johm Lewis
BEARD. Evidently the tradition of his German birth is correct, for it is
known that he was not naturalized until 1755, after coming, by way of PA,
to the newly founded town of Salisbury. Havinf learned English quickly, he
went into business and soon took and active part in the affaris of the
community, serving as town commissioner (1), as a trustee of the Salisbury
Academy (2), and as a member of the Committee of Safety 1775 (3).
pg 36: The Salisbury CHurch stood on the plot of ground now known as the
Old Lutheran Graveyard. In 1768 John Lewis Beard deeded the land to the
congregation, already in existence for some years; the agreement was that
enough space be reserved for a church, and the rest should be used as a
cemetery, since a lately deceased daughter of Mr Beard was already interred
there.
(1) Court Records XXIII, 810.
(2) Court records XXIV, 690, Valentine Beard is also mentioned.
(3) Court records X, 279. IN 1790 Salisbury numbered 50-60 homes, of which
ten were german, according to Velthusen (Nordcarolinische
Kirchennachrichten, 16).
