Seeing Stephanie's posting reminds me of a signpost I saw somewhere
along the Blue Ridge Parkway, either in NC or southern VA. It was about
the execution, by hanging, of a murderer named Tom Dula. Apparently this
event was the inspiration for the Kingston Trio's hit song "Tom Dooley".
I wonder if this is the same family.

Beard and Baird cousins who responded(hope I didn't miss anyone) this is
the nice letter I recieved from Dale Woosley in Natchez Mississippi

Hi, Stephanie,

I probably can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about this
family.
If you have been doing some research on them, I am sure you have found
that
the names
BAIRD and BEARD are used interchangeably.

Give me a day or two to put something together for you. I can create a

gedcom file of the families before and after Elizabeth Jane Woosley if
you
are able to import such a file into one of the popular genealogy
files. But
to get you headed in the right direction with Elizabeth, here is here
immediate family.

To start with, Elizabeth Jane was my first cousin, 4 times removed. Our

connection is through Thomas Woosley and his wife Elizabeth Waters who
had 14
children including her father Benjamin and Samuel, brother of Benjamin
and my
ancestor.

Benjamin Woosley born in Virginia, date uncertain, but will estimate for
you.
He died in Dec-1844 in Tazewell Co., VA. He married twice, first to
Nancy
Meadows and they had two children both daughters, Elizabeth Jane and
Louise
Meadows.

His second marriage was to Elizabeth Tynes. They married 04-Aug-1804
in
Tazwell or Halifax Co., VA. They had one child, Patience, born 1818
Patrick Co., VA She married John William Dixon.

Back to Benjamin and Nancy. Elizabeth Jane was born 28-Dec-1797 in
Halifax
Co.,
VA. She died 19-Jan-1885 in Elk Valley, Campbell Co., TN. Abt 1825
she
married Lewis Miller Baird in Grayson Co., KY. In another letter,
will
talk about that family.

Louise Meadows Woosley was born in Tazewell Co., VA, but I think I have
a
typing error on the date. Will check it out.

-----------------------

Benjamin was one of 13 sons of Thomas (sometimes listed as Moses, Sr.)
Woosley and Elizabeth Waters. Thomas died in 1796 in Buckingham Co.,
VA and
is buried there although I have searched in vain for the gravesite.
Presumably Elizabeth is buried in the same location.

Their children were:
Aaron Henry (1753, VA)(1820, TN) m. Sally Wickliff, KY
William, Sr. (~1757, VA)(1839, NC) m. Susannah Tribble, VA
John (1757, VA) (1845) m1 Charity Keek VA
m2 Priscilla Chapman VA
Moses (1758 VA) (1844 KY) m. Elizabeth Butler VA
Thomas, Jr. (1760 VA) (1856 KY) m. Dianna Tribble VA
Nathaniel (1773, VA) ( ) m. Sarah Keesee, VA
Elijah (1774, VA) (1859, TN) m. Nancy Chessher, VA
James ( VA)( )
Benjamin.........................
Samuel (1775, VA) (1844,KY) m1 Elizabeth Francis VA
m2, Phoebe Bailey VA
Elisha ( VA)( )
David (1775, VA) (1852, KY) m. Elizabeth Butler VA
Joshua (1782, VA) (1852, KY) m. Polly Davidson KY
Susannah (1788 VA) (1844, IL) m. Alexander Jones KY

I am typing this while I am sleepy so I may have made some errors. I
think
one of the Elizabeth Butlers was a Jones.
