Subject: Another Beard Bear Story

My Great Great Grandfather was David Carson Beard, born in
Tennesse, possibly Sumner County, around 1818. He moved to Southwest
Arkansas sometime before 1841 because he married Sarah Hill on January
5, 1841 in Sevier County, Arkansas. He is thought to have had at
least one brother, Dr. Richard Smith Beard. They are supposedly
related in some way to a Charles Beard who founded the Cumberland
Presbyterian movement.
Anyway, David was a hunter and trapper in the Sulphur River
bottoms of southwest Arkansas. He had great talent trapping black bear.
He in turn was trapped by a bear on one trip and had to fight for his
life. He managed to kill the bear and was forever after known as Bear
Beard.
The Sulphur River bottoms is still a wild and desolate area today
and is said to be inhabited by a "big foot" type creature. There was a
movie made several years ago about this creature called "The Legend of
Boggy Creek".
