Michelle,
Sorry, but after much thought I decided not to combine the Beard List with
the Baird List. I have turned the Beard List over to Giles McNeill at:
I talked with Karen at Rootsweb about making a cross reference that would
say: Beard--see the Baird List and give the address of
for people to subscribe to.
She did not give me an affirmative answer so it appears that Rootsweb
would like for the lists to remain as they are.
A lot of people don't know that Baird is a variant of Beard. If they are
looking for Beard, they need to be able to find it. And some families
might NEVER have used the Baird spelling.
The problems that you have noted with Baird/Beard are also found in these
lists on Rootsweb:
Gore/Gohr (2 separate lists)
Dodson/Dotson (2 separate lists)
Hanks/Hankins (not currently a Hankins list)
Garvin/Garvey (not currently a Garvey List)
Kern/Kearns (2 separate lists)
Quiram/Kwiram/Kwirant (all on Quiram List)
Sartin/Certain (not currently a Certain List)
Cate/Kates
etc.
Some people would NEVER think to look at the variant spelling in some of
the above cases, unless the spelling was VERY, VERY similar. If the
spelling you promoted was Beaird, then I think the lists could be
combined. But Baird is different enough to merit having its own list.
I hope this explains things. I think it is all right for some BAIRD
queries to go on the BEARD List, but they should have a tie in to the
spelling of BEARD in some way.
I hope that explains things a little.
Sincerely,
Glenn Gohr (Former Beard List Manager)
