Jack, I don't have any particulars or links to your query, but two
things come to mind, based solely upon location:
There was a Beard/Baird family group in Berkshire County (at Becket,
Otis, and Pittsfield) from about the 1740s on. They were descendants of
Thomas Beard and Susannah Walker who were at Mendon and Milford,
Massachusetts. Some of the family group went to Washington County, New
York, and then on to Burton, Geauga County, Ohio and to some other Ohio
counties. A descendant (Thomas Beard/Baird) of the family that settled
at Geauga County went on to found Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois.
On the other hand, one of the "founders" of Milford, Connecticut, was a
widow named Martha Beard/Baird whose husband, James, is said to have
died on the ship to the New World. She landed at Boston in about
1636/1637 with several children as part of a group that came to
Massachusetts with Rev. Peter Prudden. That group went to Connecticut
(New Haven) and stayed there over the winter while agents looked for
land to buy from Indians in the area. A significant genealogy of her
family is in the Baird/Beard book produced by Fermine Baird Catchings
early in this century at Louisville.
A descendant of Martha Beard (Ruth Beard) produced a later work on the
descendants of that family.
Both books are available as reprints from The Higginson Book Company at
Salem, Massachusetts.
I don't know if there were Bairds at Waterbury, and I don't have any
recollection of where Dolans may have been in either Massachusetts or
Connecticut. You may try working backward from 1880 in census and/or
tax lists for both states/areas, and "test" the surnames in the 1790
census index to see if you can find Dolans in either state and any
Bairds/Beards at Waterbury.
Good luck!
