Hi Fran, All

Sure, will be very glad to give you the children of Hannah Baird and
John Stewart Dean. After reading some notes I have on John Stewart Dean
from WILSON-BAIRD FAMILY HISTORY written by Franklin Crothers Shepherd,
I am more sure than ever that Sarah Jane Finch was Sarah Jane Dean. I
will add these notes from the WILSON-BAIRD FAMILY HISTORY at the end.
Notice, one of the 3 still living original members at the 50th
anniversary of the Des Moines Presbyterian Church is a JAMES HARPER
FINCH.

>From the WILSON-BAIRD FAMILY HISTORY

John S. Dean was a farmer living near Greenfiled, OH who in the early
days before railroads used to drive his livestock on foot over the
mountains to a market at Baltimore, MD. During the second war with
England, he, with his his brother James, were in the Ohio militia under
General Harrison and fought in the campaign around the Great Lakes and
Detroit. The family were Presbyterians of the strictest sort. As the
country around them settled up and new homes were needed, they with many
other friends in 1847, five families of Deans, Finches, Garretts and
others left Ross County, OH bound for Iowa seeking new locations. There
were no railroads so they traveled in a caravan of covered wagons. It
was about Nov. 1 and the 500 mile drive was quite an undertaking when
they considered that they must build themselves log cabins for the
winter at Fort DesMoines, their destination. But they were not afraid
and did not travel on Sundays, but rested up their teams. Other
partiees from the same locality who feared the coming of winter pushed
their teams and drove on Sundays as well. The Deans and their friends
arrived at Fort Des Moines several days before the others with their
teams in fine condition, while the others had their teams worn out and
badly fagged.

John S. Dean built the first mill in Des Moines and operated it for
many years.

The First Presbyterian Church of Des Moines was organized in 1848 in
John S. Dean's log house and he and his family were among the charter
members of it. When the church celebrated the 50th anniversary of its
founding, only 3 of those members were still living: James Harper Finch,
Anna Dean, and Mrs. Margaret Garrett-Murry.
