The only reference to Thomas Cayton in Brown's book that I can find is: p. 234

Caton, Thomas Cocke Co Ten, blacksmith, arrested 4-13-62, aiding stampeders
from TN to get to enemy

presumably he was assisting those going to Kentucky to enlist in the Union
Army. He is not on the list of deaths so presumably he survived the prison.
Perhaps he can be found in the 1870 Cocke Co census.
