As far as I have found, in 25 years of research, there is no documented
proof of a marriage between Old John and anyone! The stories in the early
histories of Monmouth County, NJ may be just that; we have no way of
knowing.
I would be happy to have in my files just two or three secondary proofs
of this marriage. The fact that the name 'Bedent' comes down in the family
may
or may not be proof of a marriage between a Mary Bedent and a Baird...
but certainly does not prove that there was a marriage between Old John
and Mary Bedent; anymore than the story about the shipwreck or meeting
in the woods proves a marriage between Old John and Mary Hall! At this
stage I am also not at all sure Old John was a Quaker, although I do believe
he
arrived with a group under the sponsorship of the Quakers.
Come on folks! Lets find some proofs before we become so positive that
either of these ladies was married to Old John. :-)
Personally, I have followed many trails and still have siltch in proofs.
I love the stories and do lean toward the Mary Hall marriage simply because
it was referred to so early.
As for the maternal parentage of our mutual ancestors, perhaps Old John just
found all those kiddies in the cabbage patch! :-)
