Dear Listers,
I have received additions, corrections, hints and encouragement from
this list. Thank you all.
Now I am trying to make sense of the contradictory information that I
have on Mary Bedient, 2nd wife of the immigrant John Baird to Monmouth
Ct. NJ.
In my early research days I didn't copy everything. I have excerpts
from a book and I didn't write down the authors name, regretfully. It
is BAIRD, BEARD & BARD FAMILIES. I would appreciate the author's name.
In the chapter on SCOTCH BAIRDS it says that Mary Bedent (a widow)
sailed from Staines England to Massachusetts to claim an estate devised
to them by her brother John Barnard in Hadley Mass. She had sons,
Morgan and Thomas born 1654 (twins), John and Mordecai. The SCOTCH
BAIRD book goes on to say Thomas married Mary and moved to Fairfield
Conn and died in 1698.
An unknown person wrote in the margins of the SCOTCH BAIRDS that John
Barnard ws about about 1598 and died in 1664. That the Barnards,
Bedents and Osbornes are intermarried in Fairfield Conn & Westchester
County New York "from Hadley Mass" I guess that last was to connect the
families in Hadley and Fairfield.
It goes on Morgan Bedent died in Port Monmouth NJ. He had never
married. And Thomas died intestate in Westchester, NY and his wife,
Mary was his administratrix in 1698. No children are mentioned. The
author suggests that this widow Mary Bedent becomes the wife of our John
Baird in Monmouth.
Now my questions start.
1. An on line source says that Thomas Bedient wed Mary in 1678 in
Westchester County NY. For this widow to have children until 1720
stretches my credibility. Frederick Baird suggests that Thomas Bedient
and Mary had a child named Mary who wed our John.
That would make John's wife the right age to produce children for 20
years. Since Thomas' brother was in Monmouth Count it is feasible that
she went there after Thomas' death in 1698 and her daughter met and wed
John Baird about 1699.
Are there any supporting documentation for this version?
2. Ancestry.com has 21 listings for Thomas Bedient. Each say he
married Mary Osborne. One states she was the daughter of Richard and
Elizabeth Osborne of Fairfield CN.
Fairfield is on Long Island South, just west of Bridgeport.
Does anyone have any similar information and of course documentation.
Over the next few days I
