Chapter 2: The sons of WILLIAM BOWNE
The following information comes from "Early Settlers of Kings County,
Long Island" by Bergen and "History of Monmouth County NJ" by Edwin
Salter
JOHN BOWNE
He went to Gravesend with his father and "allotted a plantation there
Setp. 20, 1647". I don't know what that means except that they were
there in 1647. On Sept 10, 1660 he bought plantation -lot #24 in
Gravesend from HENRY MODY.
He was a Representative of Gravesend at the Hempstead Convention in
1665. He was one of the patentees of Monmouth Patent "page 73, Vol 1 of
Raum's NJ". He took oath of allegiance in 1668 in NJ. (To
England??) He was elected to the Provincial Assembly in 1680 "page 87
of Cal. Of Eng. Man". By 1682 he was speaker of the Assembly. In 1683
he was appointed Justice of the peace for Monmouth County.
He married LYDIA and their children were:

OBEDYA born July 18, 1666
DEBORAH born Jan 26, 1668
SARAH born Nov 27, 1669 wed RICHARD SALTER
CATHARINE
He died prior to May 29, 1684. He signed his name John Bowne

No source is given for the names and birthdates of his children.
"The History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties" by Edwin Salter page 28,
states that in 1675 "The names of most of the early settlers of Monmouth
are given in 'Proprietors' Records' at Perth Amboy.... Very many to whom
warrants for land were issued in 1675 had been settlers for a number of
years previous"
CAPTAIN JOHN BOWNE, of Middletown claims his Rights of Land on March 18,
1675, 500 acres as being a first purchaser for himself, his wife, his
father, mother and for WILLIAM COMPTON and his wife from first year, 120
acres each, 780 acres; three servants at 60 acres each, 180 acres"
JOHN BOWNE II - The son of JOHN and LYDIA
He was born April 1, 1664 in Gravesend, Long Island
In 1684 he petitioned the Gov. and Council for a warrant of survey for
500 acres his deceased father, JOHN BOWNE was entitled to as a patentee
of the Neversinks. This he obtained on March 10, 1685. In 1704 he was
elected a member of the Provincial Assembly of New Jersey
He married FRANCIS____. His will is dated Sept 14, 1714, probated Feb.
15, 1715 and from its provisions infer they had no children.

OBEDYA BOWNE - son of JOHN and LYDIA
He was born July 18, 1666 in Gravesend, Long Island
He settled on a tract of 632 acres in Pleasant Valley, Monmouth Ct.
From "NJ Colonial Civil List 1667 - July 4, 1776 " by William Nelson
OBADIAH BOWNE of Middletown is listed as High Sheriff of Monmouth Ct. on
Nov. 3, 1693. In 1703 he was elected a member of the Provincial
Assembly of NJ.
His wife is unknown. He will dated 1725 devised his lands to his
children:

JAMES BOWNE - son of WILLIAM
JAMES lived in Gravesend and on April 20, 1670 sold to SAMUEL HOLMES 7
acres lying at a neck called Cellersneck. He purchased a tract of land
at Middletown, Monmouth Ct. In 1680 he was town-clerk of Middletown.
"The NJ Colonial Civil List" notes that JAMES BOUND was Judge of
Monmouth Ct. in Middletown June 30, 1685.
He married MARY STOUTE on Nov. 26 1665 . The Marriage Records of
Gravesend, Long Island give the marriage date as Dec. 26. In 1675
JAMES BOUND (BOWNE) made a claim for Rights of Land for himself and wife
MARY STOUT of 240 acres in Monmouth Ct. He signed his name James Bowne.

ANDREW BOWNE son of WILLIAM
ANDREW lived in Gravesend and moved to Monmouth County as did the other
known members of his family. He did not appear on the list of early
purchasers of the Patent.
He sold a parcel of meadow in Gravesend on Oct. 25, 1687. In 1691 he
sold 15 acres that had belonged to his father WILLIAM BOWNE. The Book
#2 of Conveyances, Brooklyn Kings County NY show that in June 1696
CAPTAIN ANDREW BOWNE of Chingeroras, Monmouth Ct. NJ he sold several
pieces of property which had belonged in 1685 to his father WILLIAM
BOWNE.
Like his brothers, he was a leader in the community. In 1692 he was a
member of the Council of East New Jersey. In 1698 he was president of
the court of sessions of Middletown. In 1699 he was a Deputy Gov. of
East New Jersey and Governor in 1701. In 1705 a justice of the Supreme
Court of East New Jersey
His wife is unknown. The only child given is OBEDYAH BOWNE who wed
ELIZABETH.
His will was dated May 16, 1707 and letters of Adm. Were granted on Nov.
19, 1716 to OBEDYAH BOWNE. . He signed his name Andrew Bowne
On Thursday, I'll go the known next generations.
