The BAIRD Mailing List archives on RootsWeb contain a lot of postings on the
Prince George Co., VA John Baird family. John C. Baird (deceased) was a
descendant of John Baird and contributed a lot to the mailing list. I also have an
incomplete Word document about them that he authored and I will send that to
you directly. John C. Baird received a lot of his early material from Dr.
William Baird of Dallas, TX. Dr. Baird documented those Montgomery Co., NC land
entries that you mentioned.
As far as I know, neither of these men researched further into the Montgomery
Co., NC Bairds. Their ancestors were descendants of the Alexander Baird and
left Montgomery Co., NC for Tennessee.
As you said, you are trying to determine if your Birds/Byrds are descended
from this Baird family. These days, the easiest way to answer that question is
through Y-chromosome DNA testing. As I mentioned before, we have the
Y-chromosome DNA of two descendants of John Baird of Prince George Co., VA in the
Baird DNA Project database. One of the donors is a descendant of the Benjamin
Baird who was the entry taker. The DNA of both donors is an exact match for 12
DNA markers. They are Donors #1 and #3 in the table on www.bairddna.com.
In order to determine if your Birds/Byrds are connected to the Bairds, you
need to find a male Bird/Byrd, who is descended from the oldest known Bird in
the family, and have his DNA tested. It will cost you $101. More details about
Y-chromosome DNA testing are on the following Family Tree DNA web site, which
also includes a tutorial.

Bruce; I can't tell you how much I appreciate your information. Montgomery
County, N.C. had as many as 5 early courthouses and many burned along with the
records.
There is a dark period we are struggling with from 1779 when the county was
formed, until 1850 when the first census listing children was done. What we
have is Benjamin Baird esq elected as entry taker in 1779 on the land entries for
this period. I count 19 tracts of land he purchased over a 10 year or so
period. Others include Alexander, Elenor, Ann, William, and Patey, listed as
buying land. 1790 census here is incomplete and partly illegible. Only Alexander
"Beard" is listed. 1800 lists Miles "Beard", Benjamin "Bird", and James "Bird".
From this time forward no other Beards or Bairds are listed, and during the
civil war era the "Birds" here, changed their names to "Byrd". We know the
Birds/Byrds are our family but need some help in determining whether they decended
from the Bairds/Beards. Given the circumstances above, would you kindly give us
your opinion?
Best Regards; Phillip Furr
